Inspiring Speakers and Meaningful Connections

A brain tumor diagnosis can be isolating—the National Conference is a reminder that you are not alone. Whether in-person at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center or online, the event was abuzz with energy, as patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates joined forces for two and a half days of learning, connection and support.

With a record-breaking 48 sponsors and exhibitors—ranging from biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to top treatment centers and nonprofit organizations—patients and families had access to a wide range of resources and support. Combined with intimate interactions between physicians, researchers, fellow patients and caregivers, there was a shared sense of belonging and community.

“Getting to know others who’ve been through this, that’s what I’m here for,” said Survivor Tim Abbas. “There’s so much to learn, and this is a great community to learn together with.”

This year’s program offered a variety of breakout sessions, which sparked meaningful discussions and learning. Here’s a quick look at some of the most exciting sessions:

Behind the Scenes of a Brain Tumor Board

A crowd favorite. Attendees got an insider’s view of how a panel of experts collaborate to make critical treatment decisions and to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

Finding New Treatments: From Clinical Trials to Real World Use

A highly anticipated session, this engaging talk walked participants through the process of developing new treatments, including a spotlight on the newly FDA-approved VORANIGO.

Keynote Session: Resilience in the Face of Adversity, A Journey of Surviving Cancer

Matthew Zachary, an award-winning “Cancer Maverick,” advocate, podcaster, documentarian, and nonprofit leader, delivered a powerful keynote address. A 29-year brain tumor survivor, Matthew’s embodiment of both resilience and advocacy left the audience inspired and motivated.

Brain and Spine Tumor Jeopardy

Jeopardy? At a brain tumor conference? You bet! This interactive session brought together three teams of brain tumor patients and caregivers to face off in an exciting and educational game. Coupled with some audience participation, it was a fun way to educate and further inform attendees.

A Thoughtfully Curated In-Person Experience

For those who attended in person, the ABTA created a healing and welcoming environment in which patients and caregivers were top-of-mind. Therapeutic workshops like a mindful sound bath experience and interactive art therapy offered moments of calm and reflection. Live musical performances and storytelling from Ryan Neal, a brain tumor survivor, singer, songwriter, and music producer, added a sense of joy and celebration.  And let’s not forget adorable therapy dogs from Canine Therapy Corps, Inc. Rosie, Wilson and Toezy, who brought comfort to attendees, especially during emotionally heavy moments.

Virtual Attendance: Engagement Around the Globe

The virtual experience was also enriching, with participants from around the world engaging in a full spectrum of conference activities from the comfort of their own homes. Attendees could watch all sessions, connect through virtual networking opportunities, and even take part in the popular Healing Through Writing Workshop hosted by Elephants and Tea. The workshop created a safe and welcoming space for emotional processing and creative expression, helping participants reflect on their journey while connecting with their peers.

United to Meet Hope Head On

As the conference wrapped up, attendees—both in person and virtual—left with a renewed sense of hope and empowerment. The ABTA 2024 National Conference not only provided critical education and resources, but also united the brain tumor community in a way that left everyone feeling connected, supported and inspired to keep moving forward.

The ABTA is especially grateful to our Co-Chairs, Marta Penas-Prado, MD, MSc and Roy Strowd III, MD, MEd, MS, FAAN for their dedication and leadership in developing this year’s program.

Thank you to all who joined us and made this event truly special. Together, we continue to advocate for progress, push for treatment breakthroughs, and, most importantly, meet hope head on.
