Being diagnosed with a brain tumor can feel overwhelming, but did you know that you become a survivor the moment you’re diagnosed? Survivorship is about improving your quality of life starting now, not later. It includes taking care of your mind, body, and emotions. Here’s how you can take the first steps to thrive, no matter where you are in your journey.
Breathe Your Way to Calm
When you’re stressed, it’s hard to think clearly. A simple breathing exercise called box breathing can help. It only takes one minute!
How to Do Box Breathing:
- Sit comfortably and put your hands on your lap.
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
- Exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
- Hold your breath again for 4 seconds.
- Repeat this cycle a few times.
Here’s a simple diagram to guide you:
Build Your Care Team
Survivorship is not a solo journey. It takes a team! Your team might include:
- Doctors: like neurologists and neuro-oncologists.
- Nurses: to answer questions and help you navigate care.
- Social Workers: to provide emotional and financial support.
- Friends and Family: for love and encouragement.
Stay Connected
Feeling isolated can make things harder. Reach out to support groups or online communities to share your story and learn from others.
Your journey as a survivor starts now. Take a deep breath, connect with your care team, and know you have the strength to thrive.
