When Kidney Cancer Metastasizes to the Brain

Kidney cancer can sometimes bring an unexpected challenge: brain metastases. While patients may hear about this possibility during treatment, the sheer amount of information can feel overwhelming and some details might get lost in the shuffle.

Did you know that around two to 10% of kidney cancer patients go on to develop brain metastases? These tumors may appear months or even years after the initial diagnosis, influenced by many different factors.

Brain metastases aren’t just limited to kidney cancer. Cancers like lung, breast, melanoma and colon cancer can also spread to the brain. In fact, metastatic brain tumors are the most common type of brain tumor in adults, often presenting as one or even multiple tumors. Understanding the specific nature of these tumors can help doctors create the best treatment plan for each patient. Knowing your risk factors can also empower you to advocate for your own care.
