Soma’s Story

My journey into neuro-oncology began in childhood when I lost a close friend to a brain tumor. It was a diffuse midline glioma, an aggressive tumor that occurs in the midline locations of the central nervous system. That heartbreaking experience shaped my mission to help others facing brain cancer.

This commitment deepened when I later lost my mother-in-law and a dear friend to lung cancer that had metastasized (spread) to the brain.

Since 2011, my research has focused on the GABA-A receptor and its role in brain tumors. GABA-A receptors are proteins found in the cell membrane that respond to the neurotransmitter GABA. Alongside my husband, Dr. Daniel Pomeranz Krummel, and my mentor, Professor James Cook, we have developed small molecules designed to cross the blood-brain barrier and target brain cancers in a novel way. We are currently seeking funding to bring this therapy to clinical trials.

Beyond research, I am dedicated to brain tumor advocacy and patient care. I lead integrative oncology groups and group visits for brain tumor patients, helping them navigate their journey. Integrative oncology combines conventional cancer treatments with complementary therapies such as acupuncture, yoga, massage therapy, and more. It aims to improve patient well-being and outcomes while simultaneously empowering patients to become active participants in their care.

Additionally, I collaborate with Professors Claudia Rebola and Sam Anand at the University of Cincinnati to develop AI-driven digital tools to improve quality-of-life studies for patients. Some of these tools include interactive forms of art therapy, pet therapy, and music therapy to improve quality of life and help reduce brain fog commonly associated with cancer treatments.

Through my advocacy with the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) and other brain tumor non-profit organizations, I strive to connect research with real-world impact. Every patient and family I meet inspires me to push forward in the fight against brain cancer. I am honored to do this work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and remain committed to improving the lives of those affected by this disease.

“Advocacy is vital in the brain tumor community. Giving a voice to those with limited treatment options is like opening doors where none seemed to exist—it offers hope, direction, and the power to keep going.”
